The vintage-style day is really an exercise in restraint: modern GIS software makes it easy to render crisp, high-contrast maps, and the challenge is deliberately going the other direction. This map takes Utah's urban areas and rivers and runs them through Esri's "Physical Atlas" style — John Nelson's take on the hand-drawn, engraved look of the 1854 David Rumsey Map Collection.
Why the old look still works
Vintage atlas styles trade precision for texture — muted tones, engraved-line water features, hand-lettered-feeling type — and it turns out that texture still reads clearly on a screen, not just on paper. It's a useful reminder that clarity doesn't require a sterile default basemap.
