The Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX) theme sets a constraint. The map has to use data made for humanitarian response, not for cartography. That data supports global disaster planning, not detailed mapping of one U.S. state. This was the hardest entry of the month to put together.
Finding Utah inside a global dataset
The map uses Who's On First, a locality dataset that HDX aggregates, filtered to Utah's populated places. Getting a clean Utah subset took more filtering and cross-checking than any of the UGRC or UDOT sources used elsewhere in the challenge.
Small data, real use
The result is a plain view of where people live in the state. That is a basic input for planning and emergency management, even when the map itself looks simple.
